This is a hefty pencil with a large, nearly unbreakable lead. It can be a sketching pencil for the artist, and can also can be used as a general purpose pencil. The pencil shown in the pictures is what you will receive. The stand is not included.
I provide two leads with the pencil, an HB lead for general use, and a 4B (soft) lead for sketching. Other 5.6 mm leads, including colored leads, can be found in artist supply stores, office supply stores, and on line. The leads are put into and taken out of the pencil by pressing the plunger on the end of the pencil to release the clutch mechanism which holds the lead in place. The length of lead extending from the point is also adjusted this way.
A lead pointer is located inside the plunger, and is accessed by unscrewing the plunger. This is used to resharpen the point when needed. If you collect some of the shavings from the plain black lead, this graphite dust can be used to lubricate areas where you do not want to use runny liquid lubricants, such as on wooden drawer runners.
The pencil is made from Hard Maple with chromed metal parts. The decoration on the handle is made by winding thread on the barrel, by hand, using various home made fixtures. The thread and wood is then covered with epoxy to protect the thread. The epoxy is finally sanded smooth and coated with polyurethane varnish to provide a good feel and durable finish to the pencil.
The overall length is 4 3/8" (110 mm) and it is approximately 5/8" (17 mm) in diameter.
Also included with the pencil is an insert which will convert this to a ballpoint pen. Just replace the lead with the insert. Refills for the insert can be found at any office supply store.
I can make this with other woods and different colors of threads, including military ribbons, school or team colors, or just your favorite color combinations. Just "Request a custom order" and we can design the pencil you want.
