HOW TO USE SHEEPSKIN for INSULATION: Twenty years ago we built our stucco'd straw-bale home using wool scraps as insulation inside our interior walls. It provides superior sound-proofing and bugs don't like it. You drop it in between the wall studs to fill the air-space between the wall boards. Best to line first the walls with plastic sheeting if you are putting up plaster drywall sheets or paneling. If you are doing wood slat walls then you can drop the wool in between the boards as the slats are nailed up. Its so easy, kids can help do it! And the wool is NOT irritating or toxic like fiberglass insulation.
Real sheepskin wool is naturally fire resistant. It is rated DNI: "Does Not Ignite" meaning it will not sustain a flame on it's own like other materials.
We've filled the walls inside two wood sheds on our ranch with wool for insulation. When we upgraded the windows in one shed the wool that came out was just as fresh as the day it went in. The photo in this listing shows an interior 2 x 6 staggered stud wall that we had filled with wool in 1993. In 2005 we expanded that room taking out the wall. The wool was as fresh as the day we put it in!
One pound wool generally will fill one square foot of 2x4 construction wall space.
Figure your needs by this method: Length of wall x height of wall in one foot segments = # of square feet in wall = number of pounds to fill the wall. example: 10 ft wall x 8 foot high = 80 square feet = 80 pounds of natural sheepskin insulation.
Unfortunately, even though wool is light weight the freight companies will charge by the box size so shipping will cost more than the per pound weight cost. Because there are hundreds of variables depending on how much wool insulation a person needs, you will have to contact me for a shipping quote on the quantity you want IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PICK it UP yourself.
For shipping it is usually cheapest via Parcel Post or UPS. Larger quantities can go freight trucks. Contact me for trucking quotes or arrange your own.
The default shipping as listed is set for 10 lbs goings to the furthest point in the 48 states. Freight could be lower depending on how close you live to Arizona. You can arrange for personal pick-up. If Etsy's shipping costs come out lower - we will refund the difference.
For larger quantity purchases, we have a lot more sheepskin ready for bulk purchases. Contact Judith, jmsproductsusa [!at] gmail.com
