Item details

*THIS ITEM IS HISTORICALLY APPROPRIATE FOR MEDIEVAL RECREATION*

Yarn winders like this one creates a center-pull ball - perfect for crochet or knitting. A simple tool that is ridiculously easy to use. If you have never used one, there are a number of you-tube videos that show you just how simple it is.

It is also called a nostepinne (or nostepinde), a Scandanavian word for "nest stick". This hand tool has been around for centuries and is pictured in a number of medieval and rennaissance paintings. Yes, there are modern mechanical ball winders, but none of them are such a joy to use. Nor are they as portable, or as beautiful to look at. Best of all, these treasures won't break. There is only the only piece, so no little screws or other pieces will disappear on you.

Each yarn-winder is hand turned on a lathe and sanded to a silky finish. Most are finished with walnut oil, but some are left in their natural state. Each wood is hand-chosen and picked for wood grain and pattern.

Look carefully at each yarn-winder. Some are sharply tapered, some are not (depending on the size you want for your center hole). Some have large handles, some do not. The one pictured is the one you get, no substitutions or ones that are "close".

WOOD: Andiroba
LENGTH: 11.5"
WEIGHT: 5.2 oz
FINISH: Paste wax
CREATIVE # JY-044

This yarn-winder has a larger taper, making it perfect for larger, chunkier yarns. Andiroba is from the forests of Central and South America, it is a common replacement for mahogany in many uses. In fact, besides crabwood, it is also known as bastard mahogany. The oil from the tree is used medicinally throughout the Amazon. Handling the wood may heighten some of the oils in the wood, but not enough to have any effect on you, medicinal or otherwise.

Additional policies

Cocobolo is now on the restricted woods list. It was one of the woods we loved the most, but we will not be able to buy it anymore. Unless we already have it, we won't be offering it. Please keep this in mind while shopping elsewhere, too. Responsible craftsmen will not offer a restricted wood item unless they already have that wood in stock. Ask your craftsman when they bought the wood and be a responsible world citizen. Over-harvesting results in the loss forever - wood, fish, birds, just to name a few things.
