A new offering in the shop – lovely hand turned orifice hooks for spinners! These orifice hooks are turned on my husband’s shopsmith by me out of both domestic and exotic woods. My domestic woods come from locally sourced woods and small business people who are harvesting wood from recycled wood sources. I am an active spinner and I love creating new and wonderful tools to work with and now I can share that joy with you!
This orifice hook is hand crafted out of Blue Mahoe, sanded multiple times up to a 2000 grit paper. The hooks are then finished with a high polish wax, giving the hook a smooth and silky touch; always a joy to use and admire! The hook is 16 gauge silver/gold/ or copper coated brass wire. This wire can be trimmed to work with your preferences, or left the length it currently is. The wire on the hook is 2.75 inches long, with the total length of the orifice hook 7.75 inches long including a matching wire loop for hanging your new orifice hook on your wheel. This hook also includes a wpi gauge (wraps per inch) for determining the weight of your yarn. Pick your wire color at checkout!
"Heartwood can be highly varied in color, usually grayish or olive brown colored, sometimes with streaks of green, blue, or purple. The narrow sapwood is pale yellow and is clearly demarcated from heartwood. Blue Mahoe is one of very few woods with an overall gray heartwood appearance (in its fresh and unweathered state), and perhaps the only commercially available wood that can exhibit a bluish hue. Blue Mahoe is the national tree of Jamaica, where it’s prized as a quality furniture wood. Unfortunately, this wood is now in very low supply, and is only infrequently seen (in very small sizes and quantities). It’s perhaps one of the only commercial hardwoods in the world that comes close to possessing a blue heartwood color.." Lumber data base.
This piece of Blue Mahoe has lovely golden tan color with deep stripes of bluish grey, smooth grain and truly stunning look! It is certainly a conversation piece and a wonderful tool.
I have used these hooks on my Kromski Sonata, a Schacht Matchless and a Louet Victoria with no issues; the hook slides easily into the orifice and draws out the leader with no problems.
These hooks are perfect gifts for the spinner in your life; each one is one of a kind since I let the wood tell me how it wishes to be turned. I can make hooks similar to the ones listed, but there will be slight differences since each one is turned individually!
The wool, bobbin and whorl in the picture is not included, its just a prop!
