Item details

This is a set of vintage paper pieced quilt squares. These squares are approximately 6-1/2 inches each. There are a total of 29 squares, all cut and sewn by hand.

These squares were made probably during the early 1950s, as evidenced by the paper cut from catalog pages of the time that are still sewn to the back of each square. In this case, the back side of these squares are as intriguing as the front.

I recognize some of these fabrics from the 1930s, but I feel like most of the fabric was from old clothing and curtains, as you can see sports themed fabric in some of the squares, typical of curtains for children's rooms during the 1950s. Sewing with flour sack fabric was also still a frequent occurrence then, so some of the fabrics are probably from flour sacks.

The method of piecing used is paper piecing, a technique that quilters still use today in order to use the smallest scraps of material to complete a square. This is one method used to make intricate pictures out of fabric, but during this time period it is more likely it was to make the fabric go as far as possible.

The fabrics are a colorful mix, with some fabrics used in more than one square, and some one of a kind. These are truly an example of using and making do with what you have, and they create a wonderful snapshot of life during a simpler time. They are beautiful as they are, as a history lesson, but would also look fabulous as part of the quilt top they were meant to be.
