PLEASE NOTE THAT WE NOW HAVE 3 DIFFERENT WEIGHTS OF THIS RAYON IN THE SHOP. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE BUYING THE ONE YOU NEED. CHECK THE GAUGE AND METREAGE/YARDAGE TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT WEIGHT (THICKNESS) AND LENGTH. This yarn is quite simply the best and most luxurious rayon I have ever handled.
Rayon was invented in the late 19th century as an alternative to silk, which was very expensive. It guaranteed a consistent quality and could be easily dyed in the brightest colours available.
Far from being a completely 'synthetic' yarn, rayon is made from cellulose, which is obtained from plant fibres. The best quality rayon is derived from the cellulose of cotton plants, and this is exactly what this yarn is.
Rayon is undergoing somewhat of a revival at the moment, due to the rising popularity of hand dyeing and weaving and an increase in the number of people knitting and crocheting fine lace.
You have to subject this yarn to some pretty close scrutiny to find that it is not actually silk. it is super smooth and has the appearance of the best of silk yarn.
It is very soft.
It does not tangle easily and will knit and crochet into beautiful lace, with excellent stitch definition and drape. Its strength makes it a wonderful weaving yarn.
Like silk, it does not stretch.
Brilliant white in colour, it should be dyed as cotton and should produce vivid, bright colours with little dye wastage. (you don't need a 'heavy' dye solution)
1kg per cone Priced at £40.00 per kg, which is a 33% discount on the same yarn if bought in 50g skeins/hanks.
