For creating yarn out of raw fiber (like wool or silk), drop spindles like this have been used since before man could write. There is currently a resurgence of the craft, which is music to my heart. I have been spinning for many years, and am happy to share the tradition with others. All my spindles are tested for balance and spin before they are shipped out. In making these, I try to use only natural materials - wood, stone, shell and the like.
STYLE: Bottom whorl, no hook
WHORL: Polished square slice of purple speckled lepidolite
DIMENSIONS: overall length 9 inches
whorl width 2 inches each side
WEIGHT: 2.2 ounce
CREATIVE NUMBER: MS-199
This spindle is a tapered wenge. The whorl is a piece of lepidolite, which is a soft stone with pinks and purples and whites running through it. This one has a great spotty kind of pattern to it. The spindle is accented with thread wrapping below the stone.
This drop spindle was designed as a bottom whorl, with no hook. I was not expecting much from it - it was just an experiment. This one also surprised me! It had an incredibly long spin time and a medium fast speed. It was great when I trying plying, but it also created really nice thicker singles.
This is a heavy-weight spindle. It will handle most wools quite well, especially those with a heavy crimp (lots of kink). Don't expect laceweight product from this! It will give you wonderful chunky yarns and for plying.
Jamie and I recently went to a rock show, where we found lots of beautiful stones we could use for drop spindles (you see the result in all the recent listings). We also found some things to experiment with. Only the best of the experiments made it to the listings. Such as this one!

Cocobolo is now on the restricted woods list. It was one of the woods we loved the most, but we will not be able to buy it anymore. Unless we already have it, we won't be offering it. Please keep this in mind while shopping elsewhere, too. Responsible craftsmen will not offer a restricted wood item unless they already have that wood in stock. Ask your craftsman when they bought the wood and be a responsible world citizen. Over-harvesting results in the loss forever - wood, fish, birds, just to name a few things.
