A stuffed-animal knitting pattern for an intermediate knitter. I can think of no sweeter gift for a special child or child-at-heart than a soft toy you knit yourself. Knit this sweet little whale for someone special. (I named my whale Lasse, after the dear little ocean-loving boy who inspired this design.)
This pattern is 6 pages long, written in English, illustrated with photographs in-progress and of the finished object.
Straight knitting needles, size 4.5 mm (US size 7)*
90m bulky blue yarn*
20m worsted weight white yarn*
scrap yarn in black
* Because exact size is not critical to a knit toy, you can knit your whale up in the needles and yarn you already have at hand, as long as they knit up tightly so that the toy holds its shape.
The Whale is knit flat, and then pieced together.
The pattern includes: Casting on, binding off, knitting, purling, increasing and decreasing stitches, instarsia*, short rows*, and basic finishing techniques are all used in this pattern.
*Don’t be intimidated if you’ve never tried intarsia or short rows. The pattern includes detailed instructions for these techniques. In fact, if you know how to knit, purl, cast on, bind off and follow a knitting pattern, and you are willing to try some new skills, I’ll bet you can knit Lasse the Whale. Youtube is always a fantastic resource for quick knitting tutorials. I am also available to my customers via etsy convo and/or email (yarnbirdy [at] gmail [dot] com) to clear up any confusion or questions you have regarding the pattern.
