3-Pack of Artist Panels 12 x 16 composed of Masonite, Belgian Linen Canvas, Gamblin Ground for Oil Painting (NO LEAD)
For sale, a 3-pack of hand-crafted artist panels for oil painting composed of a 1/8” thick masonite panel cut to a standard 12” x 16” size with Utrecht Belgian Linen (#135 an excellent general purpose medium-smooth weave texture) glued and sealed on the panel, and, then, treated with two coats of Gamblin Ground for Oil Painting, which does not contain any toxic lead (read more below on its superior qualities). The Belgian linen is sealed on both sides with a PVA size (poly vinyl acetate glue), which prevents the linen from absorbing moisture and, later, rotting.
This hand-crafted approach to making these professional-grade linen-masonite panels for oil painting entails following a 12-step process, creating a superior foundation for your oil paintings. Since they are made one by one in a small workshop, each one varies slightly from the other, and some panels may have a slight warp to them.
The belgian linen is wrapped around to the backside of the masonite board. To do so, requires an extra inch of linen on all sides or, in other words, a linen panel originally cut 14" x 18" as well as the extra steps and time to glue the wrapped around sections. My sister also sewed an edge stitch at the outer edge of the linen panel -- all of these extras combined will prevent fraying of the linen edges.
Initially, I did a first batch of panels with the linen cut to the edges -- with no wrap-around, and there was too much fraying of the linen and too much potential for future fraying, which then prompted me to go to the extra trouble and expense of wrapping the linen around the outer edges of the boards.
They are sold as a group of 3 artist panels.
Gamblin Ground for Oil Painting makes a strong, bright foundation for oil colors. Formulated from alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, and barium sulfate, Gamblin Ground makes canvas and linen stiffer than acrylic "gesso" and more flexible than traditional oil primers. Barium sulfate gives Gamblin Ground its tooth. Titanium dioxide gives Gamblin Ground its opacity. Gamblin Ground does not contain any toxic lead.
