Item details

These double horn 30mm carved black horn double drilled crescent beads are ideal for making an edgy bracelet or cuff for summer festival or evening wear.

They're the largest versions of this potent bead that I get made here in Bali, and are carved both sides with a smooth curved crescent-shaped surface.

They've been custom drilled with 1.5mm holes near either end, as you can best see in my final two photos.

The material is bovine horn from the SE Asian domestic water buffalo, a type of ox. See below for further details.

This listing is for one bead only.

This double drilled version of the horns is also available in bone in 20mm, 25mm and 30mm sizes in my shop.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment.

Material: This horn is from the domestic water buffalo, Bubalis bubalis, a bovine animal similar to the cow, used throughout Asia as a plough animal in the rice paddies that produce the staple food of this part of the world. The material used in Indounik products is sourced in Indonesia and the animals are not harmed for their bone or horn to be used in human ornamentation. It is a bi-product of animals that have come to the end of their life after being used for work and food - milk and sometimes meat. The bone is also sourced within Indonesia and is a bi-product of meat production.

BACK STORY
Mekepung or bull races are held in the west Bali regency of Jembrana from July to October each year.

Madurese migrants introduced the sport to celebrate the end of the rice harvest, and it has become a tourist attraction for one of the least visited regencies on the Island of the Gods.

While I'm not a fan of the use of animals for this type of sport and have never actually seen one of these events, the races are said to be thrilling contests between teams of two young water buffalo harnessed to a chariot.

The chariot is ridden by a jockey who holds onto the bulls' tails as they career down a 2km race course, kicking up dust and sweat.

The water buffalo used in these races are said to be treated with great care, and are fed elaborate diets containing "all sorts of wonderful potions and secret ingredients".

Most of the races happen outside the regency capital of Negara, next to a river estuary in the location of Parancak.
