Item details

Natural cream coloured wool in 50g balls.

The wool comes from our very own Dorset Down Sheep which are kept on our smallholding in Cardiff, Wales. This minority breed, native to the British Isles, is easy to handle and attractive to look at. The sheep are sheared annually to help prevent them getting too hot in summer.

The fleeces are sent off to the Natural Fibre company in Cornwall, UK where it is spun into the wool we have for sale.

The wool has been spin to Aran weight and would be perfect to create natural coloured garments or for dyeing. It takes up dye really well.

£4 for an individual ball or £24 for a pack of 6.

A 50g ball is 70m/ 76 yards.

Our animals, their fleece, the wool, your product - what will you make?

I made a pair of excellent socks with this wool, warm, elastic and springy! Thank you very much for your business and I look forward to buying more! As a knitting community we need to support farmers who work that hard. P.S. I used size 2.75 needles for fairly firm fabric. I would use size up for a cardigan.

Laines reçues en très peu de temps. Emballage ok. Je vais faire mon 1er ouvrage avec demain... Mais je me devais d'essayer cette laine vu que j'élève aussi des Dorset Down mais en France.

I wanted to try this yarn because Dorset Down is not a breed we have in the United States. Here is a little info for anyone thinking about buying this yarn: I used 4.25mm bamboo knitting needles to knit my swatch and I am a fairly tight knitter. I think 5mm is the usual size suggested for Aran yarn but 4.25mm is the largest size I have. My swatch yielded a gauge of 5 stitches per inch and that did not change after washing and drying. I have read that Down type wool is resistant to felting. I machine washed (warm water wash/cool water rinse) and machine dried my swatch twice and it showed no signs of felting. There is no guarantee it won't felt if I continue machine washing/drying it but I think at the very least this yarn would make a knitted item that you could hand wash quite vigorously without fear of felting it.
