Learn the ancient eastern craft of beetle wing embroidery with this beautiful beginners kit!
Beetle wing embroidery is an ancient craft technique using real iridescent beetle wing casings and is practiced traditionally in Thailand, Myanmar and India. The ‘wings’ are actually not wings at all but a protective covering for the beetle’s wings called the elytra. In 19th-century India, embroidered textiles were produced using beetle wing pieces, often on dresses for the ladies of the British Empire and also famously on the Macbeth costume of Ellen Terry now on display at Smallhythe place in Kent, England.
Sew the wings down using the pre-drilled holes or try the wonderful shisha stitch to hold them down with embroidery thread.
The kit includes: Green shot silk, calico, beetle wings with pre-drilled holes, sequins and beads, embroidery thread, needles and comprehensive instructions.
Approx finished design size: 12.5cm x 12.5cm (4 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches)
Please note: the display frame isn't included
