For creating yarn out of raw fiber (like wool or silk), drop spindles like this have been used since before man could write. There is currently a resurgence of the craft, which is music to my heart. I have been spinning for many years, and am happy to share the tradition with others. All my spindles are tested for balance and spin before they are shipped out. In making these, I try to use only natural materials - wood, stone, shell and the like.
STYLE: Russian support spindle SPINDLE: Black and White Ebony DIMENSIONS: overall length 12 inches whorl width 1 inch CREATIVE NUMBER: JY-10
Jamie hand-turned a traditional Russian-style support spindle for a friend of ours using several historical photos she had. It turned out so well that he has created a few more for sale here. It is based on a traditional Russian support spindle, where the yarns flips off the top of the spindle.
It has been hand-turned and is very, very sturdy. The tullip shape whorl keeps the weight close in to the spindle. I am not familiar with this style of spinning, so the "testing" was more of a learning experience, instead of my being able to tell you how it does. I can you it is very smooth!
Black/White Ebony is an ebony, with all the color and quality features of the other ebony woods. That means it is one of the blackest woods, as well as the most durable. This wood, though, has streaks in it of a much lighter color. The two colors don't “mix” so it has strong stripes. Though not always truly black and white (it sometimes is dark brown with light brown), it is always striped and gorgeous.
We normally ship either USPS or UPS. If you want us to insure the order, you will have to let us know. Our shipping costs cover the cost to package and ship, nothing more. RIGHT NOW WE ARE EXPERIENCING SHIPPING DELAYS OF AS MUCH AS A WEEK.
At this time, we accept Paypal only. We are physically located in California, so sales taxes apply there (and anywhere else it's required by law). We let Etsy figure it out for us.

Cocobolo is now on the restricted woods list. It was one of the woods we loved the most, but we will not be able to buy it anymore. Unless we already have it, we won't be offering it. Please keep this in mind while shopping elsewhere, too. Responsible craftsmen will not offer a restricted wood item unless they already have that wood in stock. Ask your craftsman when they bought the wood and be a responsible world citizen. Over-harvesting results in the loss forever - wood, fish, birds, just to name a few things.
