In Matthew Lewis’s The Monk, the monk Ambrosio is speaking with a young novice called Rosario, for whom he has come to feel a great friendship and love. Rosario is on the verge of revealing a great secret, but fears to do so, afraid Ambrosio will hate him upon learning the truth. Rosario is preparing to confess that he is in fact not a man, but a woman named Matilda who undertook the masquerade of being male in order to be closer to Ambrosio, with whom she has fallen in love. Seeking to reassure his young friend, Ambrosio says, “Abhor you, Rosario? It is no longer in my power. To give up your society would be to deprive myself of the greatest pleasure of my life.” Being a Gothic novel, things become even more complex once Matilda’s secret is revealed.
I thought this line expressed a wonderful sentiment, and would be best displayed as a simple Hoopla design with stylized hearts. It can be stitched up fairly quickly (the sample took me just over 14 hours to complete) and would make a great Christmas present for any friend or loved one.
This pattern measures 108 x 101 stitches. The sample was worked on white 14ct Aida cloth and (stitched area) measures 7.71 inches by 7.21 inches. It took about 15 hours to stitch.
