Buckeye burl Button with Brass accent for knitting, re purposing clothing, jewelry making, photo props
I turned this button from a nicely grained piece of Spotted Blue Buckeye Burl. This one had a couple voids in it as well as a natural indent on one edge from the burl cap. I filled the holes with Brass, and dusted Brass into the indent and sanded the holes smooth, then went back and hand buffed the area on the edge to make it smooth and shiny.
I turn many things, and build with wood, I love my craft and I cannot bring myself to throw away pieces I cut off! I look for ways to give these pieces a new life usually jewelry related, yesterday I thought BUTTONS!!!!! (For photographers doing newborn shoots, consider buying these buttons to temporarily sew onto knitted caps and hats on your babies, after the shoot clip it off you give to the parents for their scrapbooks or baby books. The parents get a cool one of a kind memento of your photo shoot, one they will surely tell their friends and family about, and you get a new accent to your prop each time. Talk to me about multi purchase discounts for photographers! ( also, they are organic)
I recently purchased a great dark green knitted head warmer and there was an ugly plastic button on the ends, sewn on to look like it held it together. This is what would be sitting on my forehead. Not pretty. So I sat down in the shop to figure out what it took to make my own.
I have several to list to start off with, all are turned round then the edges are sanded to knock off the sharp edge. What you end up with is a nice natural hand made look. I use my drill press to put in the holes, these are eyeballed so not perfectly centered, but look good if you ask me.
The button is then buffed with organic oils.
This one measures, 41.5mm across x 6mm thick.
These can be used for knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, sewing and general crafting.
Thanks for stopping by! Peace, Larissa
