Item details

For sale is an unused black and white photo postcard measuring 4 inches by 6 inches. The back of the card reads "Houses on Wheels: early mobile homes from Curtis (note Curtis has only one "s" on this postcard) Aerocars, 1936. Photography by Underwood & Underwood. The bottom left corner has "5024 Copyright Underwood Photo Archives, Ltd., San Francisco" and "Pomegranate Publications, P.O. Box 808022, Petaluma, CA 94975" runs down the middle.

Because of the typo in "Curtis" when it should have been "Curtiss" I have a feeling that this postcard may have been pulled at time of release.

The Curtiss Aerocar Land Yacht was designed and created by Glenn Hammond Curtiss (May 21, 1878 – July 23, 1930) who was an American aviation pioneer and a founder of the U.S. aircraft industry. The following was taken from Google: "He began his career as a bicycle racer and builder before moving on to motorcycles. As early as 1906, he began to manufacture engines for airships. In 1908 Curtiss joined the Aerial Experiment Association (AEA), a pioneering research group, founded by Alexander Graham Bell at Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia to build flying machines.

"Curtiss made the first officially witnessed flight in North America, won a race at the world's first international air meet in France, and made the first long-distance flight in the United States. His contributions in designing and building aircraft led to the formation of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, now part of Curtiss-Wright Corporation. His company built aircraft for the U.S. Army and Navy, and, during the years leading up to World War I, his experiments with seaplanes led to advances in naval aviation. Curtiss civil and military aircraft were predominant in the inter-war and World War II eras."

This postcard is in excellent condition. Please see photos for details and don't hesitate to ask questions. Thanks for looking.
