Victorian Era Stamped Brass Buttons - Matching Set of Thirteen - Cat Tails, Fish, Stars, Snakes, Pagoda, Ibis, Hearts, Boats, Butterflies
Thirteen Victorian Era Stamped Brass Buttons - Matching Set - Cat Tails, Fish, Stars, Snakes, Pagoda, Ibis, Hearts, Boats, Butterflies.
This listing is for a wonderful matching set of 13 Victorian era brass buttons. The buttons measure 5/8" wide and have a shank on the back allowing garments to hang and drape nicely.
Victorian era (1837 to 1901) brass buttons were often stamped with images taken from everything from operas to children's books. In fact, if you wanted to tell the world that you were a fan of a work of literature you'd sew buttons featuring a scene from the novel or story onto your coat or shirt. Other pictorial buttons took their cues from nature (flora and fauna), the sciences (stars and moons), or mythology (cupids and fairies).
These thirteen buttons certainly took cues from a great deal as they are stamped with what I first thought was an Egyptian theme, but then realized that they were not limited to this theme at all. I have recognized pagodas, ibis, snakes, boats, cat tails, stars, fish, butterflies, hearts and traditional symbols, too. These buttons are really quite extraordinary in detail. All thirteen button fronts are in exceptional antique condition, some light cleaning may be desired. The backs also appear to be in great condition with some black paint loss. The 13th button will be free, assuming that it is the extra in case one is lost.
These very unique Victorian era buttons can't be found in your local sewing or craft store.
