*Images #2 and #3 show this specimen photographed wet--all other images are dry.*
This is a small, raw mineral specimen of highly sought-after Andamooka matrix opal, from Australia! This area is famous for its precious opals, which sometimes form in seams and flecks in matrix. Flashes of color include electric greens, blues, and oranges on a dark brown background. (Andamooka opals have a matrix that has been darkened through enhancement--this makes the flecks of opal really pop!) The matrix opal features a unique spotted pattern--it is especially beautiful when wet, and would look lovely polished. A highly sought-after natural gemstone, perfect for collection or as a beautiful jewelry focal!
Locality: Australia Dimensions: 0.75" x 0.75" x 0.06" (19mm x 19mm x 2mm) Weight: 1.07 g (0.04 oz)
The Andamooka region of Australia is a tiny and world-famous area for its amazing opal deposits. It yields precious opals in many colors, such as the green seen here. The opal from this locality filters into an unusual limestone matrix, in cavities of opportunity, manifesting as flecks and more rarely veins of crystal Opal. The matrix is chalky by nature, and can mask the opal's fire--thus, it is commonly treated with a combination of sugar and sulfuric acid, which blackens the matrix. The darker color shows off the opal's brilliant colors! Australian opals typically form from sandstone source rocks (unlike the rhyolite sources of Mexico, Brazil, and Ethiopia). They are considered to be the finest and most stable opals in the world, and for many years made up 99% of the world's opals.
Healing: Opal is associated with inner vision, psychic awareness, and the dream state--the Aboriginal people of Australia use opals to enhance Dreamtime. They are also associated with feminine and water energy, and can help support confident self-expression.
