Item details

The name of this species appears late in Latin under the unexplained form Sclareia.
This specific name was already in use among the Romans to describe this plant. It probably comes from the Greek Skleros = hard, referring to the rigidity of the leaves.
The orvale name, which appears in the 14th century, is not less obscure origin.

Substantially more decorative and balsamic smell much nicer than officinalis Sage, Clary was not the least fame it as the name of "good" attests.
It is a beautiful and robust species whose size exceeds 1 meter and with oval leaves can reach 18 to 13 cm.

It is binding in relation mainly by its long spikes of colorful flowers entirely.
It is a perennial plant that is grown outside its natural region as a biennial.

She believes in the arid hillsides, rocky slopes, the old walls, along the roads in the south of France and throughout the Mediterranean region until Transcaucasia and Persia.

Quadrangular stems are quite robust, erect, branched. They are in the upper part glandular hairs (containing essential oil) are hairy and elsewhere.

The leaves are large, opposite, oval, cordate base, margin serretée, crenellated, grayish-pubescent. The petiole is 4 to 15 cm.

The terminal inflorescence of the main stem (and secondary branches) is a long panicles 30-60 cm high, viscous, on its branches whorls of flowers from February to June. Each whorl is underpinned by two membranous floral bracts, orbicular, first a pale pink veined with purple and white veined green. The flower of 3 cm long has a pubescent calyx with 13 spiny ribs and teeth and a white corolla lower lip and upper lip fake, pale blue to lilac. Flowering takes place in June.

Properties

The essential oil derived from the leaves have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic. It contains monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. The main components are linalool (42%), alpha-terpineol (13%), geraniol (6%), myrcene (3%). Linalool is one of the most used by the perfume industry monoterpenes. It has antinociceptive activities anticonvulsifiantes and sedative.

The root of clary sage is known to accumulate diterpenoids (ferruginol, salvipisone, aethiopinone). These compounds show gram-positive antibacterial activity. The salvipisone develops the strongest antibacterial activity.

Culture

Its cultivation requires a fresh soil, light, slightly calcareous and sun exposure. Propagation is by seed in early spring in the nursery, followed by transplanting in May, or by division of clumps. Harvesting occurs after 4 to 5 months after planting.

use

The leaves can be used fresh or dried to flavor meat dishes: pork, veal, mutton, venison, sausages, sauces ...

The large basal leaves were once used in Germany for flavoring wine and give it a musky taste. She also served in England preparing beer as a substitute for hops. This beer drunk it seems those who drank.

Its culture today is primarily intended to produce an essential oil used in the manufacture of vermouth, liqueurs and perfumes. Its culture is of economic importance in France, Hungary and Bulgaria.

Like all the sages, it is also a honey plant, very attractive to carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea) and sphinx gassed.

Salvia sclarea seeds are viable and are from the last harvest. The seeds are not from intensive farming and are not hybridized. This is the original species to fully preserved properties.
