Antique industrial scissors made by R. Heinisch around 1859. Shears this large would have been used by a tailor or a sailmaker. Weighing in at a hefty 3 pounds, they were not for the weak-handed. They were found in "The Whaling City," (New Bedford, Massachusetts), and I imagine them being used in the 19th century to cut canvas for whalers' square-rigged sails.
Marked "R. Heinisch Inventor Latest Patent 1859 Newark N.J." on the brass pivot.
Dimensions: 14 3/4" long x 4" wide
Condition: the tip has broken off one blade. Some rust visible.
