Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of unaccompanied sacred song of the western Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian chant developed mainly in western and central Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries, with later additions and redactions, although popular legend credits Pope St. Gregory the Great with inventing it. Gregorian melodies are traditionally written using an early form of musical notation from which the modern four-line and five-line staff developed. Multi-voice elaborations of Gregorian chant, known as organum, were an early stage in the development of Western polyphony. Gregorian chant was traditionally sung by choirs of men and boys in churches, or by men and women of religious orders in their chapels. It is the music of the Roman Rite, performed in the Mass and the monastic Office and had become the official music of the Christian liturgy. Damasquinado de Oro was created in the city of Toledo, Spain. A craft brought to Spain by the Arabs, this art of decorating non-precious metals with 18 & 24 carat gold has remained virtually unchanged over the centuries. Damasquinado de Oro items generally reflect 2 distinct types of patterns: Arabesque or geometric designs, and the Renaissance motifs, displaying variations of birds & flowers. These patterns are obtained by engraving deep, patterned cuts into steel and then placing a gold foil into the lines of the design. This foil is hammered until the gold penetrates into the cuts. Each piece is treated with a bluing solution to obtain oxidation and the black background is formed. All non-decorated areas are plated with 24 carat gold & any piece may be cleaned in the traditional way by using bread crumbs soaked in olive oil.
