Q: Is there a method to stamping?
A: Yes, there sure is. You will want a clean, even surface to stamp on. Sometimes, depending on what material you are stamping onto, you may want to add some paper underneath for cushioning. Sometimes we will use an old phone book for cushion, or for practice.
You also want to rock your stamp a little once it is placed down, without moving it. A little pressure, a little wiggle, and voila. Experiment with different papers and inks. Some papers soak up more ink, some surfaces will not dry with some inks. Try and make sure you practice your technique before the final run.
Large stamps (2" or more) can be difficult, and usually take a lot of ink, combined with solid pressure and a little wiggling to make a clear impression. Cardboard can also be a tricky surface, and usually an uneven surface means you will need a smaller stamp.
Your stamp is hand tested before it leaves our shop to ensure you'll get the best print possible. Your questions about using your stamps are always welcome.
Q: What is the best way to use my stencil for face paint?
A: We prefer wax based (water activated) face paint. We apply with a fine latex or high density makeup sponge that has been very lightly dampened with water. Be careful not to use too much water or the paint will bleed under the stencil, the dryer the better.
Q: What is the best way to use my stencil for spray paint or air brush?
A: Tape the stencil firmly into place or apply a repositional adhesive to the downside of stencil.
To get an even coat of paint, sweep the can horizontally and vertically past the object as you spray.
Be careful not to over spray. Too much paint too quickly will cause the paint to bleed under the stencil.
Practice on scrap first.
Practice makes perfect.
You can also try a temporary tack spray (3M makes some) on the backside of your stencil to make it a little easier to use. Check labelon spray for directions.
Q: Can I sponge paint on through my stencil?
A: Definitely. See above for optional use of tack spray.
We recommend a very dense sponge (not a brush, until you've got your techniques down) like a latex makeup sponge(available at any drugstore) to apply paint. You want too apply just a little paint and not press too hard to avoid image bleeds. Sponge on paint as many times as necessary to get into all the edges without using too much force. On fabric, several passes help make the best results.
Always test materials before using on your project!
Practice makes perfect.
