One-of-a-kind, antique, exterior, door salvaged from an old storefront in Brooklyn, NY. The door has a solid Douglas Fir core covered with 1/16" walnut veneers on each side. This is one heavy door--around 200lbs! It has a beautiful arched top and arched window. Below the window is a decorative appliqué, and a raised panel surrounded with multi-stepped molding.
Please don't think that "veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture, these veneers are 1/16" thick and provide strength and stability to the door.
I believe that the window originally had a leaded glass, and that it was replaced at some point with tempered glass (to meet code). The straight pieces of the interior window molding have also been replaced (most likely because the original pieces had cut-outs to accommodate the stress bars of the leaded glass). The replacement molding doesn't quite fit like the original molding did, and there is a significant gap between the molding and glass (see photo with 2 red arrows). The glass is tight and firm, and does not jiggle or move in place, however, if you would like us to make similar molding to the original, and set the glass in its proper place email us for a quote.
Hardware: Originally, the door was outfitted like many commercial doors, with push/crash bars, kick plate, and large, bulky, pneumatic auto-closer (see 5th photo). Since the photo was taken, we've removed the hardware, and now, only holes remain (see photos 6 - 10). The door is not equipped with any hardware. However, we have a good selection of period hardware to outfit the door (check out our eBay store).
* If you would like any of the hardware holes plugged with solid wood, please email us for a quote.
Condition: Commercial doors are used much more frequently than doors installed in homes. As a result, the door has nicks, scrapes, and scratches from top to bottom. However, once repaired and refinished, the door will look as great as it did when it was first built. With that said, the following are the most noticeable issues that we could find (see photos): there is a big chunk of wood missing from the top of the arch on the interior side; there are small breaks along the side of the lock stile; a big dent/break in the lower lock stile corner; the decorative appliqué on the exterior side is missing some veneer; there are a few, shallow cracks in the veneer directly below that appliqué; a large scrape under the keyhole on the exterior side; and a couple of shallow veneer cracks in the arch and near the bottom of the door.
The door is strong and sturdy, and is ready for another lifetime of service.
The glass is fully intact and may only have a couple of subtle scratches here and there.
Refinish/Repaint: We could refinish, repaint, or partially or completely strip the door to prepare it for you to repaint or refinish. See the last photos in this auction as an example of our work. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
Swing: The door is currently set up to swing into a house, towards the left. However, we can modify the door to swing in a different direction--Email us for a quote.
Modification: We could also modify this door to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, replace the glass with wooden panels or different glass, reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
