This kit has a base marked with all hexagon instead of hexagons and diamonds. When finished this ball has a uniform pattern of swirls that are all the same shape.
Choose any color for the base and embroidry thread.
With one easy stitch you can create a lovely overall swirl pattern temari ball. This kit includes all the supplies you will need and instructions with clear, easy-to-follow photographs.
This is a great project for a beginner. All you have to do is fill in the diamonds and hexagons on the temari base with the swirl stitch. You choose the size and color of the base and the color of the marking and embroidery threads. Kit includes base, matching perle cotton and a needle. The instructions will be sent to you in a PDF file.
This temari ball base (shown in the second photograph) is marked with a special variation of the C14 division just for this pattern. The dividing lines are stitched with the same pearle cotton included in the kit, so there is no need to remove the marking lines when you finish the embroidery; they become part of the design. Usually "twist" balls are worked on a variation of the traditional C10 base that has 120 shapes. You have to find the specific sets of triangles that make up the hexagons and diamonds and work over all the extra threads inside the shapes. When you finish one of these balls it is very difficult to remove the multiple marking threads without damaging your embroidery. With this ball you just fill in the 14 shapes with one simple stitch. The base is about 3 inches (7 cm) in diameter. It is filled with the traditional filling of rice hulls and wrapped with many layers of yarn and thread, so it has some give and weight.
The thread and floss color choices are shown in the photos. Thread colors are matte unless otherwise noted. The matte colors are softer and easier to work with. They are recommended for beginners. The copper is stiffer and will be the hardest to work with.
This custom kit is made in your choice of colors. Many other colors are available by request. I can also include a bell, rattle or special message for a small additional fee.
I can also make custom sizes. Larger sizes will be slightly more expensive.
The colors will vary by dye lot, but the kit includes more than enough perele cotton from a single dye lot to finish the project.
These bases are handmade and the hexagons will not be perfect, but all the balls in the photos where made with similar bases. The pattern is very forgiving and small imperfections only add to the "organic" feel. Part of this variation is due to the fact that these are soft balls with many layers of wrapping not styrofoam balls covered with a thin layer of thread. I can produce more uniform shapes when I spend more time adjusting the markings, but it takes hours. I would have to charge three times as much and you probably would not notice a difference in the finished ball.
I can usually make up a custom base in two days, but please allow a week or two, especially if it is a large order or an unusual color.
Instructions will be emailed. Other pieces sent USPS.
