This is a carved bas relief frog and bee tile inspired by work from the era of the Batchelder Tiles from the 1920's. I used to live in Topanga Canyon which is not far from the original Malibu Pottery Studios which I first believed them to be but I now believe they may have been Batchelders ( a noted arts and crafts tile maker based in Pasadena and San Francisco) . While out doing some yard work I unearthed some amazing little treasures. They were tiles with little creatures and grapevines that connected to form a magical little nature scene of grape vines, birds, frogs, and rabbits. Needless to say I was terribly excited and to make matters even more fortuitous, I had been planning to build a bathroom. So...I set about making my own tiles loosely based on their theme ( not duplicates). I designed and carved my version which were about twice the size of the ones I found - mine - the ones listed, are approximately 6" x 6" and approximately 1/2" thick. They vary just a bit as they are hand made - not factory cranked and I added a couple of my own creatures - a kind of reinterpretation.
The tiles that I originally carved I had made in clay by a ceramicist but the ones I am offering for sale on Etsy will be cast in cement, stained and sealed. The stain I have used on this ( the one shown is one of the original clay pieces) is a rich golden honey and the raised parts are brushed with white. Then the tiles will be sealed for protection.
This listing is for the frog only. I also have a hummingbird, rabbit, heron, two different double grape leaves and a single grape leaf end piece. Please study the photos carefully for configuration purposes.
On photo #3 you will see the tiles in a row so that the vine matches up - the bottom two pieces would connect to the left side of the ones in the photo - the double grape leaf to the rabbit and then the heron. If you order all 7 to form the vine as a whole I will number them for you on the back to make lining up of the vine easier. Keep in mind that the single grape leaf is an end piece and will only match up next to the frog or the other grape leaves. You just need to study the vine placement to figure it out. I will be listing all those separately.
If you have questions - please send me a convo - I am easy to work with (-:
These would make a wonderful back splash or bathroom border ( see photo #5 - that is my old bathroom). They would also be cool checker boarded or interspersed throughout. Another thing I had done was to carve out the middle of a saultilo tile and place it in the middle like it was a frame. I did that for a floor I had. I also did the same on my kitchen counter top. I can picture them in the garden or a fountain as well.
I am currently asking approximately 4 to 6 weeks lead time. You could receive them sooner but I never know how busy things will get and it is best to err on the side of caution.
Please check out the matching tiles.
So far as shipping goes I am now asking on the high side and then refunding any excess as prices keep changing. I package things with the utmost care. If you want to order a large quantity ( say over 20) please send me a convo so I can re estimate your shipping charges and decide which shipping method would be best. For smaller packages I like to send USPS Priority but for larger orders UPS may be a better option. I also require full insurance and I will let you request a signature required in notes to seller. Outside the US please note that any VAT or import taxes are your responsibility.

Shipping & policies
I will be shipping most of my items USPS Priority Mail which includes $100.00 insurance and tracking ( in general 1-3 day service, however, I have noticed sometimes it has taken a little longer - I am in Northern California ). In the case of some of my larger pieces it will be on a case by case basis ( whether to ship USPS or UPS ). If you purchase one or two smaller art cards which I sometimes carry, they go out first class mail. I ship most of my items within 1 to 2 business days unless otherwise stated ( some of the larger items may need more elaborate packaging, thus take a little longer to get out but rest assured that getting it to you safely and soundly is a priority). If you would like a shipping upgrade or more insurance please convo me and I will research prices and make you up a special order page. If you live outside the US, any additional VAT taxes are your responsibility. If the shipping charges turn out to be more than a few dollars less than I have charged you then I will issue you a refund on the excess.
I am currently accepting credit card and PayPal at the time of check out. If you would like a different method to pay for your item it will be on a case by case basis and your payment must clear before I ship it. Please send me a convo if you are interested in alternative payment plans. I am also considering a layaway type payment plan for my more expensive items but I must do more research.
If I am shipping to a California address, I am required to charge 7.5% tax and after April 1st 2015 it will be at the rate of 7.75%.
Returns & exchanges
If your item arrives to you damaged please notify the carrier and take photos within the first few business days of arrival so that a claim may be filed and let me know ASAP as well. I have to look up the post office policy and write a more in depth policy based on their procedures as I have been fortunate enough to not having to have crossed that bridge. I should have a more comprehensive policy within a couple of weeks.
Please Convo me with additional questions as I have not formulated a comprehensive policy at this time. For custom orders, I have written on the description whether the entire piece needs to be paid for ahead of time or whether a 25% non- refundable down payment is required. It is on a case by case basis as the cost and time involved with a piece varies.
I do not do consignment at this time but I will consider wholesale discounts on multiple orders on a case by case basis.
