Item details

Vintage pillow lace bobbin originating from a U.K. village.

Used but in great condition, without the spangles this bobbin measures approximately 4" in length. Spangles can add up to another 1"+ to the height. Some may still have some thread attached.

This bobbin can be used as an interesting display piece or in an art or jewelry project. Let your imagination run wild with other creative uses! What a unique piece of lacemaking history!

You will receive one bobbin as shown.

Bobbin lace is also known as pillow lace, because it was worked on a pillow, and bone lace, because early bobbins were made of bone or ivory. Bobbin lace is one of the two major categories of handmade laces, the other being needle lace, derived from earlier cutwork and reticella. finished it is released from the pillow by removing the pins.

It is made by braiding and twisting lengths of thread, which are wound on bobbins to manage them. As the work progresses, the weaving is held in place with pins set in a lace pillow, the placement of the pins usually determined by a pattern or pricking pinned on the pillow.

(Spangled bobbins were traditionally used in the East Midlands of England, in particular the counties of Bedfordshire, and other traditional centers of lace making. As large numbers of identical, plain bobbins were used, each spangled bobbin on the pillow of an English lacemaker was different, as to tell them apart. Some even had their owners names inscribed on them. The spangles, or beads, also acted as weights to stop the bobbins from rolling around on the lacemaker’s pillow and also stopped the thread from unwinding

Returns & exchanges

Many of my buttons are antique, vintage, delicate, glass or all of the above. I do not guarantee their performance when applied to garments or laundered in machines. On the other hand, many are modern (post WWII) factory buttons, in sturdy plastics or metals, and are as durable as today's new buttons.

As with most products, common sense is required in the care and use of vintage items.

Refunds are accepted; please send me a convo or email first, then package the product safely and ship via USPS no more than 14 days after receipt of item. Return shipping costs are the buyer's responsibility
