This is one cool historical doosie of a find. Rand McNally was founded in 1856 in Chicago, Illinois. You may have heard of them since they are the American publishing company that has been and still is the undisputed first name in map making amongst other things. In 1868 they agreed to print tickets and timetables to serve Chicago’s booming railroads, which is the nation’s premier railroad hub. They also provided the service of posting those train schedules along with their railroad maps in the stations, using… you guessed it, these official hammers. When they where first made they where a bright shiny silver color with a beautiful rosewood handle. I have seen examples of these that have been carefully kept in this original condition and probably never saw action. This one however was clearly used for that which it was made and that makes it an extra special piece. It has some great dents and scratches from doing it’s job and has a wonderful age appropriate patina. This awesome hammerhead has historical significance to Rand McNally, Chicago and rail travel. This would make an outstanding gift for anyone who collects pieces from any of those subjects. Please see all photos for further details.
