What is Khadi

‘Khadi’ (pronounced Khādī) is hand spun, hand woven fabric from India and could be cotton, silk or mixed fabric. It is an eco-friendly fabric with a great socially positive impact. It is extremely versatile. For instance, a rougher yarn can be used to make a shoulder bag, while a silken blend makes for classy evening-wear.

Khadi is also one of the world's most breathable materials. The fabric feels cold in warm weather and warm in cold weather. As it is handspun, it is not as smooth as a mill woven cloth, which gives it a very unique texture. ‘Khadi’, was made popular by Mahatma Gandhi due to its focus on self-sustenance of village economy. The fabric is available in different weaves and colors. The fabric can be dyed with regular or vegetable dyes.
Khadi also has a huge positive social impact. The Khadi industry in India today employs close to 6 million people. Khadi is spun and woven by weavers in villages and towns of India. The weaving is done on hand looms. Members of the family assist in the production process which includes preparing the yarn, spinning and weaving. Women of the house are also actively involved. At Earthen Colors, we work directly with the artisans for stoles, shirts, and jackets made from Khadi.

As Khadi is hand spun and hand woven, the fabric is never ‘flawless’ and it has inherent irregularities in yarn, color and weaving such as knots, variation in yarn thickness etc. But these irregularities give Khadi its uniqueness and make it a special fabric as no two fabrics will be same.

In organic Khadi, the fabric comes from the non-genetically modified (non GM) old world cotton of the type ‘G.Herbaceum’. This cotton has short to medium staple length and closed to semi-opened boll type which is picked along with its Calyx. This variety of cotton is grown under rain-fed cultivation where the entire crop cycle is completed without or with very little irrigation. It is mainly grown in the western part of India.

What makes this organic Khadi special-

Khadi itself is ECO-FRIENDLY AND SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE fabric. The organic Khadi combines the goodness of Khadi and organic. The fabric comes from the old world cotton of the type G.Herbaceum. Unlike conventional agriculture, where majority of the cotton grown in India is hybrid/Bt Cotton, the cotton used in making organic Khadi is PURE or NON GENETICALLY MODIFIED variant. Normally to improve features in cotton plants, genes from hybrid cotton plants (inter-specific hybridization) or genes from other plants/organisms (genetically modified) are used. In this variant of cotton, no such technique has been used, hence it is genetically pure.
Another eco-friendly feature of this fabric is that this variety of cotton grown using only rain-fed cultivation where the entire crop cycle is completed without or with very little irrigation, hence it is very water efficient and with minimal carbon footprint. On the other hand, the hybrid varieties of cotton use approx 1400 liters of irrigated water to cultivate 1 kg seed.
It is grown without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The Organic Khadi generates 109 grams of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases per 1 kg of seed cotton (cotton lint with cotton seed), hybrid/Bt Cotton generates 628 grams.

For organic Khadi, only natural/herbal colors are used in dying process and no chemical dying is used. In herbal dying process, different herbs, flowers, roots, barks, vegetables, plant extracts, metal etc are used in various combinations to come up with a wide range of colors. Further, to come up with very dark shades, the fabric is dyed twice/thrice to get the desired effect. The colors are fixed by using alum and other compounds. A few examples of the colors and the natural dyes used to get that color are -
• Indigo (blue): This is obtained from indigo plant (Indigofera tinctoria), a leguminous plant native to India.
• Scarlet: comes from Rubia (madder) plant which is a climber.
• Yellow – comes from either turmeric or Helu (Meyna laxiflora) shrub.
• Red – pomegranate/ other shrubs
• Black and Rust color - Ferrous acetate made from iron scrap.
• Crimson – from Lac /shellac resin
• Brown/ dark brown – catechu, which is an extract of acacia plant.

The width of this fabric is 38 inches.
