The ink is made from black walnut trees that grow on our organic farm in Garrard County, Kentucky. We only use isopropyl alcohol for preservation and do not add cloves, like other varieties. Cloves may darken the color of the ink, but we have found that people prefer the natural brown for ink and stains.
We allow our husks to decay naturally for 4 months, before adding water, and soaking for another 30-60 days. After it has naturally turned a beautiful dark brown, we set it on a wood fire and cook it at a rolling boil for about 8 hours. After the ink cools down, we strain it through a metal strainer and 3 types of cloth, to get out as many solids as possible.
When in the bottles, there should be no sediment on the bottom, but if any should appear, it can be mixed back in with a straw or chopstick in the small bottles, or a spoon in the larger jars. Do not attempt to shake the container to mix ink. It will not mix contents, and could cause it to spill when the container is opened. Before each use, swirl the bottle upright for a few moments to even out the color.
**Please use caution with this ink. It is extremely pigmented, and will stain anything it touches.**
**Clean up any spills immediately. We use Dawn dish washing liquid for quick cleanup, and an alcohol pad for any that is set in.**
