Knife Edge Spalted and/or Wormy Sycamore Weaving Shuttle
This listing is for one (1) shuttle.
~ 7-7/8" - 8 1/2" Long
~ 2" Wide
~ 5/16" Thick
About the shuttle:
Great for inkle weaving, tablet weaving/card weaving, back strap weaving and other small detail work. The long side has a beveled knife edge for packing the weft threads in nice and tight.
These shuttles are handmade by me. Each one is hand sanded and sealed with a hand rubbed, close to the grain, urethane finish. I hand polish them for a silky feel when using. Keeping the finish close to the grain helps to deter chipping of the finish and also provides a better feel to the wood.
The photos for this listing are for illustrative purposes only. Each shuttle is one of a kind due to natural variances of the the wood grain and texture. I assure you that I always select the finest woods available so that each is a work of art like no other. I have been crafting fiber working tools for local weavers and friends for over 15 years. Their feedback to me has been that they love how well these work and feel because I put a lot of effort in making sure they are the finest quality shuttles available.
Similar to maple, the wood of Sycamore trees is predominantly comprised of the sapwood, with some darker heartwood streaks also found in most boards. (Though it is not uncommon to also see entire boards of heartwood too.) The sapwood is white to light tan, while the heartwood is a darker reddish brown. Sycamore also has very distinct ray flecks present on quartersawn surfaces—giving it a freckled appearance. Sycamore has a fine and even texture that is very similar to maple and the grain is interlocked.
