I designed The Alex Shirt for my 18 month old son to wear to an outside Autumn wedding. I wanted a light and cool outfit with a vintage feel, and combined a linen voile shirt with linen trousers and a double-breasted vest (patterns for these sold separately as well as in a pack).
This is a perfect opportunity for upcycling! As well as standard instructions, I have included instructions for transforming adult shirts into children’s shirts in this pattern. This is an eco-friendly, cheap and easy option! Sizes 0, 1 and 2 are generally able to be made from a standard shirt. For larger sizes, mix and match with a contrasting shirt or other fabric. Consider cutting a pattern piece over a pre-existing pocket, or cut the cuff and collar pieces out of lace patches. The best part of this process is avoiding sewing buttonholes!
Advanced beginner. Neat top-stitching of collar and cuffs is required, as well as sewing buttonholes.
Estimated time to complete:
Sizes 0 to 7
1 year old (10kg, 76cm tall) to 7-8 years old (approximately 125cm tall)
Most light and medium-weight woven (non-stretchy) fabrics are appropriate. These include broadcloth, linen and linen blends, suiting, poplin and patchwork fabrics. Many adult garments can be recycled into children’s vests. Instructions on how to utilise button plackets on shirts into this design are included.
Other materials required:
Matching sew-all (polyester) thread
1cm (3/8 inch), included in pattern.
