The “squared Off” English Paper Piecing pattern is inspired by a traditional tile motif of square blocks rotated to an angle and offset with small squares. Since there are only two basic shapes that make up the motif, it’s a great project for beginners, or more seasoned stitchers who want the challenge of creating intricate “fussy cut” designs. The geometric design lends itself well to fabrics that include lines, stripes, and other prints that can create continuous designs across multiple shapes. The templates included with this pattern can be enlarged or reduced to suit the particular print you’ve chosen, so customize to your heart’s content!
The instructions are fully illustrated with photographs (see second and third images). It also includes a coloring page to audition colors and prints, alternate design options, and links to informational websites for EPP techniques.
- Approximately 1/3 yard of fabric in at least 3 colors/shades (for a finished piece containing 25 blocks and 16 squares measuring about 12" x 12" when finished). More fabric may be needed if you increase the size of the paper pieces or fussy cut specific designs.
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Thin cardboard to make a cutting template
- Printed templates
- Paper scissors
- Fabric scissors
- Thread (matching thread for sewing and contrasting thread for basting)
- Hand-sewing needles
