Fiber-artists, today is your lucky day. Amazing Vintage Swedish Rya Yarn for $8/skein! This yarn has been out of production for many years. I purchased a lot of it from a close-out sale because I recognize the quality and didn't want it to disappear to an auction house where someone might get it who has no idea how amazing this yarn is... so I bought it for YOU knowing that my customers would know it has to be good for me to have it (since I never carry junk).
I now have Frosta yarn in 12 different colors. (Color #5 and #6 in the 6th image have sold out) Feel free to ask me to prepare special orders for you for whatever colors you want in any quantity you want from any of my listings for Frosta yarn--they don't have to be all in these brown shades. The last photo is a sample card for color numbers you can choose from. Note: As of August 2017, I have created price breaks for the Frostagarn. If you want to buy 15 skeins or more, read this blog posting: http://byrdcallstudio.com/new-price-break-on-vintage-swedish-frostagarn/
Frosta was made in the still very active Borgs Vavgarner yarn company in Vittsjo, Sweden. They still produce many yarns today, but no longer the Frosta. The Frosta is categorized as a tradional Swedish style rya yarn. Google them.
I would describe the Frosta as being very much like the LUNDGREN yarn (retails for $10/skein) and the ÅSBORYA yarn still made today (which I offer at the retail price of $13.00 skein). Being of an older vintage, the Frosta yarn seems to have more of a wool sheen which is very desirable in creating depth for fiber-artists. Frosta is softer to the touch than Raumagarn from Norway (which I also love and retails for $16/skein), but sufficiently coarse enough to hold its place in weavings, rya, knitting, tapestry, or what ever you want to use it for.
Specifications from the Label (which is a little hard to read):
BORGS Frosta garn 100% Pure Wool Nm 2,2/2 Hank 4x25 gr 110 Meter +/- 5% 3.5 oz. 120 yards +/- 5%
Color hardiness Washing 30 deg. C, 90 deg. F 4 - 5 Highest value is 5 Light (Fade resistance) 6 - 8 Highest value is 8 Rubbing 4-5 Highest value is 5 Moth-proof
The yarn is in excellent condition (most still in the perforated plastic bags they have been stored in for decades. Most, not all are still labeled and numbered. The only damage is the "scotch tape" mark on the label has yellowed the label a bit. See label photo above. Big deal.
For rya rug makers, I would definitely use this yarn in my rya work for wall-hangings. It would most likely as good as or better than many rya yarns for the floor, but I always recommend the Rauma--at least one strand added to each needle for the resilience a walked-on rya requires for a long life.
I will be adding it to my next rya. Contact me to chat if you have used Frosta for other purposes that I should be extolling! When it is gone, it is really GONE, so if interested, do not wait.
