30 FRESH SEEDS, HAND HARVESTED FOR THIS SEASON

HARD TO FIND!

MEXICAN BUCKEYES LOVE HEAT AND SUNSHINE and are VERY DROUGHT TOLERANT…as illustrated by my photo #4, that tree is planted in a highway median here in town. It gets no care beyond Nature and the occasional spring pruning.

THEY ARE SUPER TREES AND AREN’T PLANTED ENOUGH.

Mexican Buckeyes, members of the soapberry family, are indeed distantly related to the North American species, but Mexican Buckeyes are such unusual plants that they are the only species in their genus.

Despite their common name, they range mostly in Texas, west of the Brazos River, into southern New Mexico and south into northeastern Mexico.

They are thought to resemble redbuds, largely because they bloom at roughly the same time in the spring, but timing and pink blooms is where most of the resemblance ends.

Unlike redbuds, their rosy pink blooms burst out in the spring at the same time as their new bronzy leaves emerge. Their deciduous leaves are pinnate and feathery, going brilliant yellow in the fall. The blossoms quickly give way to green ripening to brown, leathery tri-lobed fruit (or seed pods) that hang on the bare limbs all through the winter.

The large shiny black seeds are about 1/2” to 5/8” in diameter and are truly beautiful. They have been used by children as marbles and drilled to be used as beads and buttons by adults. Evidence of their use by indigenous peoples of northern Mexico dates back 8000 years.

This plant may be used as a large, multi-trunk shrub or trained up into a tree. Typically it is trimmed up into a multi-trunk tree, much like crepe myrtles.

Its basal branching and tall spreading habit makes it a very good choice for an attractive tall deciduous screen.

Mexican Buckeye is very easily propagated by seed. I just throw a few into a pot of good potting soil and compost, keep them watered, and stand back.

THEY ARE VERY HEAT AND DROUGHT TOLERANT.

They also tolerate a wide variety of soils: clay, loam, sand, acidic, alkaline, well-drained.

They love full sun BUT make wonderful understory trees as well….growing to taller heights in full sun situations.

MATURE HEIGHT: 15 - 30 feet, growing taller in full sun, moderate grower

USDA HARDINESS ZONES: 7 and south into Mexico

USES: Container or above-ground planter, landscape specimen, deciduous screen

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: FOR BUFFER STRIPS around parking lots and median strips in highways, near decks or patios

OUTSTANDING ORNAMENTAL: Spring Bloom, great for the bee/butterfly garden, should be planted more

GREAT WINTER INTEREST: beautiful fall leaf color display, then the gray/brown/black mottled bark, and very showy persistent seed pods

PESTS AND DISEASES: none of major concern

THESE SEEDS ARE HOMEGROWN, HANDPICKED AND CLEANED, AND WERE COLLECTED THIS SEASON.

We ship the same or next day after payment clears, unless other arrangements are made.

We love the United States Postal Service for shipping. We will be glad to offer you whatever level of USPS service you prefer or require, from economy to express...with the exception of live plants.

Live plants will ship on Mondays and Tuesdays, only, by Priority Mail, at the minimum, so they arrive in viable, healthy condition.

We also have ready access to UPS and FedEx, and will certainly use either of those services, if that is the preference of our customer.

Larger and heavier packages, however, are shipped FedEx Ground, which generally means they arrive in 3 to 5 business days.

Larger and higher priced orders will be insured. We do not like the idea of either our customer or the Studio taking a loss for damages incurred in transit.

If your goods need to be delivered outside the continental US, please contact us and let us get you a shipping quote.

Payments

All our prices are posted in US dollars (USD).

PayPal is our default method of payment. We can also accept credit cards and are perfectly willing to discuss other modes of transferring funds.

Payment is due at checkout. Custom contracts require a 50% down payment to initiate, once agreement has been reached regarding designs and costs. We will supply email updates regarding the progress of work at its various stages, with a final update and invoice for the balance due at completion of the work. Balances must be satisfied before orders are shipped. Works with balances due for longer than 7 days will be "put on the shelves" and made available to everyone as part of the Studio's inventory.

Returns & exchanges

Honestly, this has never happened to me, but I must address the possibility. I do love a happy customer.

If you find you are truly unhappy with your purchase--it doesn't match the description, color, size, condition, quality, or you were shipped the wrong item entirely--we will accept the return of unused/unworn/unaltered items--just notify us within 14 days after delivery. Refund or exchange for equal value of full purchase price will be made upon the return of merchandise.

All return shipping/insurance fees are the customer's responsibility.

Additional policies

Custom, Made to Order sales are FINAL. We work hard to please our customers before work even begins and keep them happy and apprised during the process to completion. Down payments for custom orders that remain unpaid are not refundable.
