Item details

Amazing tiny "pine"cones from an amazing tree: the Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) was thought to have gone extinct during the Miocene, approximately 5-7 million years before present. However, in 1944 the trees were discovered growing in western China, making it a "living fossil". Further adding to this specie's strange tale is the fact that the species has experienced morphological stasis, which means that the trees (and cones!) from living Metasequoia are identical to fossil Metasequoia from the Cretaceous period ( 80-65 million years before present).

The cones are very interesting and lovely: seen from above they appear generally oval; if you look at them straight on (down the cone's axis) you see that they are square. You will receive about 50 Metasequoiacones, all fresh from this year's cone drop, carefully dried, and the majority with stems.

Cones vary in size slightly but average 1" long by 0.75" in diameter. Collected on private land from a living tree in a sustainable manner. Cones have been oven-dried.

I'm a big fan of Dawn Redwood cones. I wanted some baby cones to put into the bottom of a hurricane lamp, and they're perfect.
