Butterfly Whimsy is a stylized pictorial design that incorporates simple, straight-line hand or machine embroidery for the butterfly’s antennae. The tips of the antennae are exaggerated with fabric squares. The wings of each butterfly are made from four pieces of a single, colorful print, and the wings are shaped by adding two half-square triangles of the background fabric to each of the four pieces before they’re joined together.
The Butterfly Whimsy block is 10 inches square when finished, which includes a full inch of background fabric surrounding the butterfly itself. Because the background space between the butterflies is built into the block, simply joining the blocks together after they’re constructed is the most obvious layout to use with this design. But if you don’t want an overall background in a single fabric, two other layout ideas are explained and illustrated in the pattern, one with sashing.
