How is your custom order made?
When custom orders are received the pieces are each individually hand thrown by the artist on the potter's wheel. They will be very similar in appearance but not exact because no two ever come out alike. That is the beauty of ordering something custom made it truly will be an original piece of art.
The process can take up to three weeks because if first has to be wheel thrown and then it takes 3-4 days to be removed from the bat, and then it has to have all the sculpturing and other elements added. At this stage it is called green ware and is very fragile.
The next step in the process is for it to be cleaned and then fired at 1800 degrees Fahrenheit this is called bisque firing. Once the piece is ready then it is hand glazed and painted and then it goes through a second more intense firing.
Once in a while a piece will shatter going through the firing process because the temperatures are close to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This ensures that only the strongest and most durable will survive but it can mean a longer wait time because the piece will have to be re thrown. If this happens you will be notified and given the option to wait for another piece or a full refund will be issued.
Although we do our very best to get all the Christmas orders out on time because of the sheer volume of custom orders received all orders after the last week of November cannot be guaranteed to be shipped on time. Please keep this in mind when placing your order. They will be worked on in the order in which they are received. Some of the pieces take longer to dry if they are larger and heavier so the pieces are fired once they are dry enough.
It is an amazingly long and ardous process for your beautiful piece of pottery and these pieces have hours of work and love into every one of them for you to enjoy for generations to come.
