In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dr. Seward has been caring for a mental patient named Renfield. Unbeknownst to Dr. Seward, Renfield has been driven mad by Dracula, and is seeking immortality for himself. One night, Renfield bursts into the doctor’s office and cuts Dr. Seward’s wrist with a knife. The doctor punches him, and Renfield falls to the floor, where he remains. The doctor calls for help and binds his wrist. He is then shocked to discover that Renfield is licking up the pool of blood from the floor. “He was easily secured, and, to my surprise, went with the attendants quite placidly, simply repeating over and over again: ‘The blood is the life! the blood is the life!’”
In designing this pattern, I wanted the feel of a vintage poster. I made the letters an eye-catching red and black, and used the same red in a slightly art-deco border that evokes the look of pooling blood.
It took about 17 hours to stitch.
