For Sewing Out Loud is a home based business started by myself, Trish Gower, as a last ditch effort to subsidize my full time job and pay medical bills. My then fifteen year old daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2014. The goal was to make some extra money to pay some bills, but the result has been a fun exciting venture that is giving me great joy to succeed at! Julie is now cancer free, and has scans and checkups every three months at Riley Children’s Hospital.

My designs consist of mostly children’s themes, but also include sports, hobbies, holidays, friendship, food and fun. I pay attention to detail… you will find that most appliqué lettering includes fill stitches in the middle of the letters to avoid excess trimming. Satin stitching is wide enough to cover the edges neatly, and is usually topped with a triple stitch to accent the detail. Color changes are as minimized as possible, to avoid unnecessary re-threading of your machine. Appliqués are planned out so extra thickness is avoided where possible.

My favorite embroidery stabilizer is a No-Show Mesh fusible; many brands carry this, including Fil-tec, Baby lock, Sulky, Nancy’s Notions, and Anita Goodesign. It is lightweight but sturdy and handles the extra stitches an appliqué requires. I also lightly stabilize my appliqué fabric. This gives a gorgeous crisp look that holds up to washing. I recommend hand or slow machine wash, hang dry. Many fabrics such as sparkle or confetti dot cannot be machine dried as the sparkles are glued on.
