~ Rhyolites

Nestled at the base of Mt Hay, on what was once a rumbling volcano and the thudereggs you admire today are the fruits of its violent eruptions – “Volcanic Birthstones”. Ordinary on the outside, these geo treasures are stunning underneath and their layers tell the story of an incredible geo journey.

What are Thundereggs?

Hot Beginnings… Mt Hay’s thundereggs formed in silica-rich volcanic rocks resulting from ancient lava flow called Rhyolite 120 million years ago.

Trapped in Time… The flowing Rhyolite trapped small particles and tiny gas bubbles, leading to the development of ‘volcanic birthstones’.

Stars in the Stone… As the lava cooled the star shaped cavity often seen in thundereggs (spheruloids) developed.

Lasting Layers… The cooling caused minute cracks to occur, allowing silica-rich solutions to seep into the cavities. This filled them with minerals such as quartz, agate, chalcedony, quartz crystals, amethyst, jasper and opalite.

Revealed… Due to weathering over the past 120 million years has exposed these volcanic wonders.

~ Agates from Agate Creek North Queensland are world wide known amongst agate collectors as the most colourfull agates, with the most spectacular patterns.

Formed from microscopic crystals of quartz laid down in bands, this is a very stable crystal. 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

Agate Creek agates are more and more difficult to find, let alone good ones! Only about 30 % of those agates dug up, cut and polished are collectors items!

Agate Creek is only accessible by 4-wheel drive and is far away from any form of civilization and is situated about 500 km south west of Cairns, North Queensland. (400 km from The Atherton Tablelands)

Average temperatures at Agate Creek are around 40% C

How to Care for your Jewellery

If properly cared for, your handcrafted jewellery should provide many years of enjoyment. Sterling silver jewellery naturally takes on a blackish tarnish over time in reaction with air. These are easily removed. You can buy a silver-cleaning cloth, or use some baby toothpaste (non abrasive) on a cloth or soft toothbrush. Gently rub at the tarnish, then wash and dry to bring back the super-shine. Avoid harch chemicals, hairspray or perfumes. Storing your silver jewellery in sealed plastic bags will help retard tarnish. Gemstones have differing degrees of hardness, because of this care should be taken as how they are stored especially softer materials.

These are natural stones which have imperfections. This also adds to the uniqueness of the jewellery pieces.
