Item details

When I was a very little girl, my grandmother used to twist and knot her handkerchief into a little doll for me to play with in church.

My “HANKY” doll is a more sophisticated rendition of that primitive doll, but it retains its simple charm. The knotted corners that form the hands and feet are wonderful to soothe a teething baby. The long, narrow point of the cap can easily be tied around the ring of a pacifier.

Skill level: This simple doll is a great first project for those new to Waldorf doll making. The un-sculpted, round head is very easy to make, and the body requires minimal sewing.

Finished size of doll is approximately 10 inches, not including cap.

Best fabric choices will be relatively thin woven cotton or cotton interlock knit, nothing bulky or stiff.

Materials for the doll:
* Un-spun wool batting for stuffing.
* 1-inch wide tubular cotton gauze (7 inches for each head).
* 1/4 yard cotton interlock knit in the skin-tone of your choice, cut 4 inches by 5 inches.
* Embroidery floss - red plus your choice of eye color (blue/black/brown).
* Strong cotton craft thread to match doll skin fabric.
* For cap, 1/4 yard cotton fabric, cut 7 inches by 10 inches.
* For body, two 18-inch squares of soft fabric, such as woven cotton or cotton interlock (tee-shirt knit). Minimum cut is 1/2 yard.
* Optional: 1/2 yard of cotton yarn for hair.
