Item details

I designed this smoking jacket at the request of my three brothers, who want to be cool. It is designed in a 6-panel, vintage, semi-fitted style, and can be finished with a fabric tie, a silk curtain tie, or frog closures. It features contrast shawl collar, contrast cuffs, front double-welt pockets with flaps and has shoulder pads inserted. It is fully-lined, and has an internal double-welt handkerchief pocket.

It can be a challenge to take on this sewing project if you haven’t sewn a lined jacket before, but I promise it will be worth it to see it worn to a Buck’s night, ball or other big event at the end. The instructions are very detailed, and there are plenty of photos to guide you.

Styling tips!
I loved purchasing fabric for this project- I recommend going all out and choosing a patterned silk brocade, a velvet or velveteen, or other embroidered fabric. Line it with a light-weight silk/cotton or cotton/polyester blend. Check out FabricsAsian on Etsy for a great range of fabric, and excellent customer service:

The frog closures are a classic look. I had mine custom-made in a large size from Etsy shop Notionally Better, at:

Sewing expertise:
Intermediate-advanced. Design requires sewing of welt-pockets, shawl collar, bagging a lining, and neat hemming of lined garment.

Estimated time to complete:
10 - 15 hours

To fit:
Chest circumference 92cm (36”)
Pattern to fit chest circumference 97cm (38”), 102cm (40”), 107cm (42”) and 112cm (44") are available separately.

Other materials required:
Matching sew-all (polyester) thread
Small piece of cord or braid for belt ties (30-40cm long)
One pair of shoulder pads
Optional frog closures or curtain tie
Sewing machine
Overlocker not necessary

Seam allowance:

1.3cm (1/2”), included in pattern for most seams. Attachment of sleeve to jacket and welt pockets use 1cm (3/8”) seam allowance.

This is not a final product. It is a downloadable pattern in PDF format that will be available for you to print immediately after purchase.

NOTE regarding printing of PDF patterns: Because there are many large pattern pieces for this garment, I have formatted it to be printed on A4, A3 and A0 paper. Each of these formats will be available in a separate document. The A4 and A3 sizes have a large enough margin to be printed on USA letterhead and ledger/tabloid paper respectively. Always make sure you print at actual size and print the test square first!
