Item details

This is a natural Australian Opal and has mostly orange and green fire and a touch of yellow fire. Depending how you rotate it, there is different fire. It has a light base. I hand cut this Australian opal myself. It weighs approximately 3.21cts and is an off squarish shape. It measures about 10m x 12m and is about 4m thick. This stone is hand cut and is one of a kind, you can't ever duplicate it like you can most other gemstones.

There is no treatment whatsoever, it is totally natural. This stone is a freeform cut, not a standard size. Standard sizes can be nice, but when you try to conform to a certain shape and size with opal, you can lose precious fire from the opal. These freeform stones are the most beautiful because they are so unique.

The stone is SOLID, not a doublet or triplet. Be careful of paying a high price for a doublet or triplet because they are not solid stones and usually won't hold their value.

Australian Opal is not absorbent like a lot of the Ethiopian Opal. It will not absorb water like the Ethiopian Welo Opal so the stone won't crack as it dries.

Be careful of any Opal, like a lot of the Ethiopian(Welo) that is porous as well. These types of Ethiopian Opal are called Hydrophane(porous). Some cutters will treat these opals because they are so easily absorbent. They will use smoke treatment or an acid/sugar bath so that you get a false dark base background to make the colors(fire) stand out. It won't be worth the price you are paying for it and it since they are treated, they cannot be considered natural stones anymore. Also, since these Opals are porous, you would have to keep them out of water as well because they will absorb the water and then when it dries, it may crack the stone.
Just make sure that you are careful when buying the Opal types like that. Australian Opal is not porous so you don't have to worry about any of these problems.

The pics are taken as close as we can to the color, but opals can be tricky because the fire sometimes looks different as you roll the stone. Usually, the stone looks much better in person. The pics were taken in outside light, but more in the shade so you can see the fire. Sometimes the direct light will wash the colors out for the pictures. Opal is interesting because it looks different in various types of light. Don't use fluorescent light because it will kill the red colors in it.
