This blanket was an idea started by a friend of mine who at the time was pregnant and wanted to knit a blanket for her baby's room. She had JUST started to knit and had manged to master garter stitch in a very lovely scarf and was just starting to look at purling which started by confusing her dreadfully!! (we'll blame the pregnancy hormones!!) She showed me a picture of a cabled blanket costing a small fortune and asked if there was a pattern similar to this that she could knit for the baby's room. I baulked!! and carefully explained the complexities of cabling and combined with her confusion over purlstitches she asked me to design and knit a blanket in neutral colours for the baby's room, the only stipulations were that she liked the cables and she wanted it chunky.
(larger if blocked well!!)
12mm circular needles (you could use LONG straights but with the weight of the blanket I would seriously advise the circulars)
10 balls of Rowan Biggy Print or a similar super chunky yarn.
4 balls of Sirdar Big Softie or similar chunky yarn for the edging.
