Quaker ABC 123 Sampler
I created this design after seeing some lovely samplers from Ackworth School, a Quaker school founded in 1779. These samplers were made between the late 1700s and early 1800s by pupils as a sample of their needlework skills.
The simplicity and symmetry of these Quaker samplers really caught my attention and I knew that I just had to stitch up some of the traditional motifs into a design of my own.
This sampler includes some of my favourite Quaker motifs. I have tweaked most of these, either to change the balance of the motif, to increase or decrease the size, or to ensure that the medallion design is truly symmetric. Other motifs I have created myself to give this sampler a modern finish.
The alphabet and numbers are based on a traditional design. Here I have changed some letters, and added others to create a full modern alphabet and numerals.
