Antique French Lace-Making Pillow from France. These wonderful, whimsical, and functional lace-making cushions were a traditional part of village life in France. Some areas were known for lace-making such as Le Puy, France. In Le Puy, I saw a lace-making demonstration and was fascinated. Parts of Belgium were also noted and famous for lace-making.
Bobbin Lace was and is made using a pillow or cushion like this one with an open cavity at the top for storing lace in progress and also extra bobbins. Covered in oilcloth, wool, cloth, or other materials, the base was usually wood. Heavy paper patterns with designs drawn in ink served as patterns for the lace.
This particular lace-making pillow is from France and dates from the early 1900's. It is probably 100 years or older. Oilcloth with patterns of children playing, gentlemen and ladies enjoying an afternoon, and boats adorn the covering. Red ribbon and a satin cover with an orange disc complete the pillow. Tape is held around the edges with straight pins having nicely colored tips.
Oilcloth has pulled away and exposed the linen backing in places.
Overall, this is one of the best examples of lace-making pillows I have seen in France. Most of the time all of the wooden bobbins have been removed, few colorful pins are still in place, and moths have eaten holes in wool.
Lovely, original, and colorful! Lace-making is a skillful craft which is being revived by those dedicated to lace and traditional needle and fabric work.
Includes 18 wooden bobbins attached with thread and pins and 11 additional bobbins inside the top pocket. Comes with all bobbins and thread attached.
Bobbin lace is treasured as are these original lace-making pillows.
