Item details

Quack to your hearts content when you're wearing The Duck mask. As aquatic birds, ducks are really successful and live in all parts of the world even in the sub-Antartic areas. Most species of duck are very social so your mask should be worn at parties and get-togethers where you'll be at the top of the pecking order. Preening is an important behaviour in ducks and with your mask you'll be able to relax more after bathing. In human culture there are many examples of the duck; from Donald Duck, Daffy Duck and Howard to Psyduck from the Pokemon game. It's up to you to decide whether to become a cultural or real duck but when you do you'll have a lot of fun with this mask.

This is a pattern/template with instructions to allow you to build a 3D low poly Duck from card. The pattern and instructions are in the form of a digital instant download PDF file.

To build the mask you'll need a printer, 15 pages of card (craft card or recycled card), scissors and glue. Full instructions are provided and the pattern is compatible with A4 and US Letter sizes. You can also find basic instructions on how to build our masks at https://youtu.be/i5SB12ewY5w

You can also use the pattern as a base for a paper mache project - see how I do it at: https://youtu.be/sEZQ2YKdpJI

The pattern will fit the head of an adult male (60cm circumference) but you can scale it to fit a smaller head and instructions are provided to do this. The instructions also include a pattern for an internal head band which you can use to give a snug fit. The pictures of the mask show me (a petite woman) wearing a full size mask.

There are just 50 parts to the mask so building it (cutting, folding and gluing) should take no more than 8 hours. It's therapeutic to build and you can do so while listening to your favourite music!

The completed mask will be plain which you can then decorate in any way you please. I've shown an example of one decorated in cartoon style but I'm sure you can do better!

Please note that the pattern is for personal use only.

Just ask if you have any questions.

Thanks for looking and enjoy building your 3D mask!
Christine

FAQs

A: You'll get a downloadable PDF file which contains the pattern, build instructions in English and picture of the completed model.

A: Quite easy really - provided you take your time and enjoy it. The instructions show the best order to build things and the pattern itself is designed to be as intuitive as possible. I also include some 'getting started' instructions for beginners which explain how to read the pattern, how to cut out, score and fold them. There's also a getting started video on my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/i5SB12ewY5w) which gives some additional handy tips.

The description in each shop listing shows how many parts the model has and gives an estimate of the build time. A rule of thumb I use is to say that each part takes about 10 minutes (to cut out, score, fold, glue and assemble) so a mask with 6 parts, for example, could be done in about an hour once it's been printed.

A: Yes, each paper model is usability tested by me before being listed in my shop. I print, cut out, score, fold and assemble each design to make sure that it's easy as possible to build. Usually each model goes through a couple of revisions before being listed. I also write the instructions after building the model so that I can highlight the best order to make it. Take a look at my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/7a6vKcRnydA) to see how I design the models.

Printer. If your printer does not support printing onto cardstock then you'll need to use the pattern as a template Scissors or craft knife Scoring tool (e.g. dried ball point pen, paper clip...) Ruler

A: Yes. The pattern should be printed actual size and will work for both US Letter and A4. There's also a check line on each page to make sure that your pattern is the correct size.

Craft card/paper either A4 or US Letter size (210 gsm / 280 micron / 110lb index / 80lb cover or thicker preferred) or reclaimed card to be ECO friendly School/PVA white glue

A: Most of the models are not coloured. This allows you to decorate it in any way you please. I try to show some design ideas in each listing to help you. Some models are textured though so you'll need to print those on a colour printer. The textured models also contain the pattern in non-textured form so you can even decorate that if you wish.

A: Definitely acrylic paints; either liquid craft ones or artist acrylic paints in tubes are by far the best. They offer a good range of colours and are cheap to buy. Acrylic spray paint can also be used if you want a quick and uniform finish but you need a well ventilated and contained area for spraying.

A: Either. The pattern is designed to fit an adult male head (and to be large enough for 99% of the population) but if you want to scale it for a small child then you simply reduce the scale when printing. The instructions describe how to do this in more detail. All of the masks have a headband template as well to give you a snug fit.
