The truly stunning fully double flowers of this peony-type poppy are dark purple to maroon and are as close to a black colored poppy you will find. Large blooms are 4-5" across with ruffled petals that simply look incredible in the garden and are great for cuttings to use as indoor arrangements. Blooms are followed by handsome seedpods that are highly sought after for use in dried arrangements. Plants have strong stems and will grow about 3-4' in height with a spread of about 12". It looks awesome with white, red or blue flowers in your garden.
Sowing: Sow in pots in Autumn/Winter or directly in Spring For Autumn planting sow seeds in peat pellets or newspaper pots. Seeds germinate in less than a month. Keep moist at all times, transplant to larger pots as seedlings grow. Plant out in Spring Otherwise, sow direct where they are to flower in spring (at around 20°C / 68°F) in short drills ½ in deep. Cover lightly with soil. The seedlings will appear in rows approx 6-8 weeks after planting and can be told from nearby weed seedlings quite easily.
