Yuzen Chiyogami paper
The strength, softness and pliability of the mulberry bark gives Yuzen its unique qualities and makes it particularly suited to craft work. Although the base paper is machine made, printing is carried out by a hand silk screened process and is the reason that Yuzen is often referred to as “handmade paper”. The delicate patterns are repeated throughout the length of the paper sheet and often mirror authentic kimono prints. Chiyogami can to be cut into pieces and made into paper dolls or pasted on tea tins or small paper boxes. The striking pigment colours, careful registration of screens and wide range of designs make these papers ideal for picture mats, books and box making.
** I use this Yuzen Chiyogami papers for most of my crafting work (crane earrings for instance) for my Etsy shop.
Mingei is a laminated paper, very similar to Unryu paper. It is nice to the touch and flexible. Mingei means "folk craft " and was the name of the movement at the turn of the 19th century when the disappearing crafts in Japan began to be valued.
The top layer is kozo– which is why the colors are so intense – and the bottom layer is wood pulp. Often you see mingei as end sheets in hardbound books in Japan.
Lightweight paper which contains strands of Kozo fiber that are added to the sheet to create contrast and texture. Tear Unryu Paper in any shape you desire to creating a soft, feathered edge. The name "Unryu" literally means Cloud Dragon, the strands of fibre reminded the old craftsman of Japan the dragons flying in the sky with wispy clouds. As the name suggests, it has long fibers that swim majestically in all directions, a huge palette of colors, translucent appeal. Unryu papers are distinctively unique in their appearance and are available in many colours, textures, and thicknesses. Like all Mulberry papers, Unryu is made from the bark fibres of the Mulberry tree, and not from the inner wood or pith.
Aizome Chiyogami Washi Paper is a specialty origami paper that blends intricate Japanese designs, rich blue color and soft textures. Aizome (indigo dyeing) is characterized by a deep blue color that is also called “Japan blue” because of its beautiful hue, and is highly appreciated in other countries as well. It has been treasured by Japanese people since ancient times, and it is now used for modern items such as clothing and craft materials.
The popularity of Aizome items using natural dye, which are time consuming to make, declined for a while. However, the texture that natural indigo produces has been revalued recently, and Aizome items are becoming popular again as beautiful Japanese traditional arts and crafts. Since they do not use chemicals and have an antibacterial effect, another reason the Aizome fabric and clothes made from them are highly regarded.
*Kozo (Mulberry) bark is used in the majority of washi today. Kozo became a cultivated plant used especially for paper and cloth making. With long fibers, 100% Kozo papers are strong and durable, used commonly in conservation & repair, woodblock and other printmaking.
