Peanut Wood freeform cabochon.
Peanut Wood is formed when driftwood meets the ocean. The driftwood is eaten by shipworms (wood-eating clams) and eventually sinks to the bottom. The shipworms leaves the distinctive holes where tiny siliceous shell sediment settles over the tunneled wood and fills the holes with white silica.
Measurements: 1 5/8 inches x 1 3/16 inches (41mm x 31mm)
All my cabs have a 15° bevel edge and a 45° chamfer around the bottom edge. The 15° bevel is for bezel setting or prong setting. The 45° chamfer prevents the cab from chipping and also allows room for solder when setting. The back of the cab is unfinished.
My cabs are all thoughtfully sourced, cut and polished by me. I select the nicest cab placement from each slab, even if it means discarding a lot of material around the cab. Some cab makers are more interested in making as many cabs as they can out of a slab – not me!
I carefully source my rough materials – collecting them in the great outdoors is my favorite. I also scour estate sales of old rock hounds, visit gem & mineral shows and buy and trade with other rock hounds.
I take pride in making cabs from rare materials. Many materials are gone from their natural locations, simply picked clean. Some sites have been closed or covered with man-made structures. I'm very excited when I find rare rough material!
